DESCRIPTION:In this talk I will share some reflections on the cosmological
constant problem (CCP) and what may possibly solve it. \n \nIn the firs
t part\, I will present an example of a new mechanism for addressing the p
roblem of radiative corrections to vacuum energy based on global constrain
ts arising from a lapse function in a higher-dimensional gravitational the
ory. Inspired by Horava-Lifshitz gravity\, we consider a 5d spacetime with
anisotropic scaling along a compact extra dimension\, while preserving Lo
rentz invariance in 4d. In the deep IR\, the lapse generates a global cons
traint on the 4d geometry\, closely analogous to vacuum energy sequester (
VES). Although the two theories differ\, radiative contributions to SM vac
uum energy nevertheless cancel in a similar fashion at all orders.\n \nIn
the second part\, I will then reinterpret the CCP from the point of view
of (-1)-form global symmetries associated with continuous couplings. We ar
gue that GR with a cosmological constant actually contains two (-1)-form g
lobal symmetries. (Note: it is generally argued that quantum gravity shoul
d not admit any global symmetries!) I will show how flat gauging one yield
s Henneaux-Teitelboim unimodular gravity\; gauging both leads to the local
formulation of VES\, which solves the CCP. Building on this intuition\, w
e propose a general diagnostic for determining whether a gravitational EFT
admits a CCP. I will also discuss parallels with the strong CP problem in
QCD\, where topological susceptibility diagnoses the problem.\n \n\nhttp
