DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Barry C. Barish (Caltech\, 2017 Nobel Laureate in Ph
ysics)\n\nThe discovery of gravitational waves was reported from the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) one hundred years af
ter they had been predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916. The first detecti
on was of the merger of a pair of binary black holes from two widely sepa
rated suspended-mass interferometers that had unprecedented sensitivity to
  the distortions of space-time of less than 1 part in 10-21. Today\, I r
eport on that discovery and the ten years of gravitational waves science t
hat have followed.\nLocation: Main Auditorium\, IBS Science Culture Center
