Soft Matter is a variety of physical systems that are deformed or structurally changed under a thermal or mechanical stress of the magnitude of thermal fluctuations. They include liquids, colloids, polymers, foams, gels, granular materials, liquid crystals, and some biological materials. Therefore, the study of soft matter is a fundamental interdisciplinary science between physics, materials science, biology, chemical engineering, and chemistry.

This Conference is designed to provide a broad perspective on the fundamental science and contemporary research in soft matter science. It covers four different aspects of soft matter science: nonequilibrium, materials, biological physics, and theory. For the Conference, 12 speakers are invited and each will give one-hour oral presentation.

The Conference is hosted and sponsored by IBS-CSLM (Korea Institute of Basic Science - Center for Soft and Living Matter) and UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology).

09:30 → 10:30 Shape-Tunable Wrinkles and Some Defects in Liquid Crystals

notes The surface topography of materials affects various physical phenomena, e.g., wettability, optical property, tribological properties. Here, as an interesting surface, the shape-tunable wrinkles [1], which are buckling-based surface undulations on soft elastic substrates capped by a hard thin layer, are shown. With the shape-tunability, it is possible to tune capillary phenomenon on the surface, optical diffusion, and friction. Especially, some self-organized defect structures in liquid crystals bounded by the wrinkles are shown

10:30 → 11:30 Packing and assembly of nanomaterials under flow: from drying colloidal coatings to flow-aligned nanowire networks

notes Solution-based processing is a widely used method of preparing functional nanomaterials. One common feature is the process is the packing and assembly of nanoparticles and nanowires under flow, in this talk, I will use two examples to show our experimental efforts to understand the rich physics and mechanics problems in this process. The first one is the fracture in drying colloidal coatings. Using in situ fluorescent imaging and a technique called Traction Force Microscopy, we directed measured the spatial and temporal distribution of stresses and strain built up during the drying process. Our results reveal the underlying mechanism of the drying-induced fracture in colloidal coatings, as well as the effect of fluid transport in the deformation of packed particle networks. In the second example, we use a shear flow to prepare silver nanowire networks with various degree of alignment. We established a relation among shear rates, degree of alignment, and electrical and optical anisotropy in silver nanowire networks.

14:20 → 15:20 Feeding for Energy and Information

Speaker: Prof. Erel Levine (Harvard University, USA)

notes Animals have evolved mechanisms for gathering information from the environment to make apt decisions. An important example is the regulation of feeding, where animals weigh nutritional value with the associated energetic costs and risks of pathogens and toxins. Here we will measure quantifiable feeding behaviors of the nematode C. elegans, observe unknown communications between tissues and among animals, and learn how these behaviors are designed to collect both energy and information.
