The QUAX experiment searches for axion dark matter in the 35–45 μeV mass range using complementary cavity haloscopes at INFN Legnaro and Frascati. This talk will focus on the Padova/Legnaro haloscope, which has reached near-KSVZ sensitivity above 40 μeV. The experiment employs a tunable, dielectrically loaded copper cavity in an 8 T magnetic field and a quantum-limited readout chain based on a traveling-wave parametric amplifier (TWPA). Ongoing R&D on transmon-based single-photon detection will also be presented, together with LC-circuit detection scheme with a high magnetic field and SQUID amplifier for gravitational-wave and their possible application to low-mass axion searches.
