Description

The swampland program aims to delineate those effective theories that are compatible with quantum gravity from those that are not. In this talk I will discuss one such criterion, the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which can be phrased in terms of black hole stability. There are interesting connections to black hole thermodynamics, and studying the conjecture using effective field theory reveals potential counterexamples which require additional assumptions on the UV to rule out. I will focus on charged, dilatonic black holes before turning to generalizations to rotating black holes in 3D and the "total landscaping principle". Based on [1909.01352], [2006.06696] and [2011.05337].
