 About Baekje Kingdom and Buyeo

Baekje was one of the three ancient kingdoms on the Korean peninsula (Baekje, Silla, and Goguryeo) and it lasted for about 700 years (18BC ~ 660 AD). Baekje Kingdom changed its capital twice and Buyeo was the last capital. In 2015, 8 historical sites of late Baekje Kingdom era were designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the 8 sites, 4 of them are located in Buyeo, 2 in Gongju and 2 in Iksan.

 Baekje Royal Tombs Park

The Baekje tombs clustered in Neungsan-ri outside Naseong City Wall display a unique difference from the royal tombs of the earlier period, which had usually been built at the center of the capital in order to highlight the royal authority. Most of these tombs had been looted before excavation, but archaeologists nevertheless discovered a stone sarira reliquary and a gilt-bronze incense burner made in 567 at a temple site to the west of the tomb complex.

 Jeongnimsa Temple Site

The temple was first built when the capital of Baekje was moved from Gongju to Buyeo. Buddhism flourished during Baekje Kingdom and this temple was located in the center of the capital. At the temple site, there is a 5-story stone pagoda that shows the aesthetics of the Buddhist art of Baekje era.

 Seodong Park and Gungnamji Pond

Seodong was the name of King Mu of Baekje Kingdom. At this park, there are sculptures of King Mu and his wife, Princess Seonhwa, based on their love story. Gungnamji Pond is the first artificial pond in Korea that King Mu made for his wife. All four seasons are beautiful, especially during the summer, many different types of lotus flowers bloom from the pond, and the visitors can walk amid the delicate fragrance of lotus flowers. In October and November, the Goodtrae Chrysanthemum Festival takes place to display various artworks.
