IBS Workshop on Prospects of Particle Physics and Cosmology

Advisory committee meeting (Dec. 3) and the IBS workshop (Dec. 3-6)

IBS Workshop on Prospects of Particle Physics and Cosmology is an international workshop on the current topics on particle physics and cosmology, including particle physics beyond the standard model, collider physics, supersymmetry, axion like particles, dark matter, early universe, inflation, gravitational wave etc. IBS Workshop on Prospects of Particle Physics and Cosmology hosted by Center for Theoretical Physics of the Universe (CTPU) will take place in IBS located in Daejeon, Korea during the period of December 3-6, 2018. In the workshop, various topics on particle physics and cosmology will be discussed.

        Colloquium: When a Symmetry Breaks
What is common among a magnet, a flounder, a rack of laundry, your heart on the left of your body, and the Higgs boson? The concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking is ubiquitous among many natural phenomena. I'll describe the basic concept and its applications. In particular, the original concepts from Anderson, Nambu, Goldstone, and Higgs do not quite work in many systems that include a magnet on your fridge. I generalize the concept so that it is applicable to all known natural phenomena around us.
